TRIMMING THE CHURCH BUDGET

November 15, 2010 by Ken Blue

By Ken Blue

church budget“There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” Proverbs 21:20.

Recently, a pastor friend asks if I would write something about trimming the church budget. He then laughed and said, “Maybe the answer is to just run it through the shredder.” That would be an easy way to get rid of the budget, but it will not eliminate the problem.

The first thing is to make a list of every known expense you have. Once you have done that, separate between the fixed expenses and the variable or non fixed expenses. Fixed expenses are easy to identify. However, it may be necessary to keep a diary of all other expenses so you will know where non-designated monies go. You will discover that these differ from day to day.

See where you spend your money, and decide what you could do without. Some expenses are one-time events. But there are also expenses that you’ll regularly see in the diary. Monitoring your spending this way helps alert you to the expenses that add up quickly and really don’t significantly improve your ministry. Eliminate as many of these as you can.

As you consider expenses, there may be ways to reduce the overhead. I will list a few things to consider.

1. You might be able to cut down on the number of phones you have, or the plan.

2. Turn the water heater down. Check to see that toilets are not running 24/7. You can work out a fixed yearly budget with the city or county concerning utilities.

3. Put lower wattage and fewer light bulbs in fixtures.

4. Install motion sensor switches in each room so lights will go off when there’s no activity.

5. Make sure the heat and air conditioner are off when the building is not in use.

6. See that windows are closed.

7. Set heat a couple of degrees lower.

8. Look for signs of waste and eliminate it.

9. If required, talk to the bank about refinancing to lower your payments.

10.  Do not add missionaries or building projects that you can’t pay for.

11. Cut back or eliminate special meetings and guest speakers; they do not build your church attendance or budget.

12. If necessary, have the midweek service in a smaller room and save on heat.

13. Double your outreach efforts. When Jesus wanted Peter to pay the taxes, He sent him to catch a fish!

14.  If none of these solve the problem, you may need to lay off some staff.

15. Take special offerings occasionally to meet a need.

16. In some cases, the pastor may be required to seek additional employment.

Pastor, there’s only so much you can do. However, I am convinced that there are some things you could do that might ease the financial burden a little.

TRAINING MEN FOR THE MINISTRY

WHERE MEN FOR THE MINISTRY COME FROM

By Ken Blue
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2.

God has blessed Open Door Baptist Church over the years by calling young men from the membership into the ministry. Most of the men in the above picture were saved, trained, and ordained at Open Door. God continues to do this under the leadership of Pastor Jason Murphy. In addition, some of these pastors are training and sending others out to serve the Lord in the ministry. God’s plan is that the process continues.

Brother Tim Shanks and Ken Stewart are also from Open Door. Pastor Shanks has trained and ordained three men who are now in the ministry. Brother Stewart has taken the leadership of God’s Word Baptist Church and Pastor Shanks has been called to replace Pastor Ken Bates in Corona, CA.

Our job as pastors is to reach the lost, train them for ministry, and help them get established in serving Christ. God’s grace had been poured out abundantly on Open Door, and we praise Him for these and many others who are serving Him.

PASS THE BUCKETS AND PRAY

October 17, 2010 by Ken Blue

Prayer and activity go hand in hand.

By Ken Blue

“It is recorded of D. L. Moody that, upon one of his journeys across the Atlantic there was a fire in the hold of the ship. The crew and some volunteers stood in line to pass buckets of water. A friend said to Moody, ‘Mr. Moody, let us go to the other end of the ship, and engage in prayer.’ The common-sense evangelist replied, ‘Not so, sir; we stand right here and pass buckets and pray hard all the time.’ How like Moody this was! He believed that prayer and work were the two hands of the one person: that they should never be separated.—Christian Herald (London).” There is the attitude among some that the less organized the work, the more spiritual one is.

Some time ago I wrote an article about plans and methods to reach a larger segment of one’s community. In that article I failed to mention the Holy Spirit. I receive a scathing response reprimanding me of the omission. Of course the respondent does not, and never has pastored a church, nor did he give his name. Typically, he was fresh out of Bible College; Wasp are always largest when first hatched.

I remember one of my Bible teachers telling us, “If you think yelling ‘amen’ in this class will give you a passing grade, you are in for a big surprise. I expect you to study and get a passing grade.” I discovered that he meant exactly what he said.

[pullquote align=”right” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]Activity is never an excuse to neglect prayer, nor is prayer an excuse to not work your smartest[/pullquote]

Prayer should precede everything. It is wise to pray before you answer your phone. You would think this would be understood, and I think the mature believer does. I am confident that neither writer nor reader prays enough. The Scriptures are clear on the subject of prayer. We need to pray more.

Now, I do not mean any disrespect by the following, but you can pray till you are blue in the face; and God will not mow your lawn for you. He will not sing in the choir, teach a Bible class, clean the buildings, wash the windows, preach the sermon, organize the ministry of your church, or drive a church bus. These, and many other things, are the practical side of the ministry, and must be done by men and women with understanding.

You don’t have to set down the bucket to pray while fighting a fire; pray and grab another bucket. Activity is never an excuse to neglect prayer, nor is prayer an excuse to not work your smartest; they are the two hands of the one person.

DIE HERETIC!”

August 1, 2010 by Ken Blue

Die Heretic“DIE HERETIC!”

A man was walking across a bridge one day and saw another man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So he ran over and said “Stop! Don’t do it!”

“Why shouldn’t I?” the man on the bridge said.

“Well, there’s so much to live for!”

“Like what?”

“Well… are you religious?”

“Yes.”

“Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?”

“Christian.”

“Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?”

“Protestant.”

“Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?”

“Baptist.”

“Wow! Me too! Are you Independent Baptist or a Convention Baptist?”

“An Independent Baptist!”

“Me too! Are you an original Independent Baptist, or are you a reformed Independent Baptist?”

“Original!”

“Me too! Are you a Universal Church, Independent Baptist, or a Baptist Bride Local Church Only ?”

“A Universal Baptist!”

“Die, Heretic!!!”

MISTAKEN IDENTITY

GODLINESS OR GREAT GAIN

GodlinessBy Ken Blue
“…supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.” 1 Timothy.

It is noteworthy that the text is found in the Pastoral Epistles, and the context is speaking of pastors and teachers. One of the ways God allows men to deceive themselves is their assumption that any kind of gain indicates their godliness. This is where the end is built on the wrong premise.

The pastor should realize that there is little relationship between material success and godliness. Some of us have been around long enough to discover that most of the godly pastors have very little in the form of material possessions.

There is the deception that men build large ministries because they have some secret connection with God. That is not the case. Godliness is one thing; material prosperity is quite another. All of us know men who have built large ministries, while living in gross immorality. The problem is that talent and personality are mistaken for godliness.

[perfectpullquote align=”right” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]…godliness with contentment is great gain![/perfectpullquote]

Christian, do not envy the successful. Keep your eyes in the Book and on the Lord Jesus Christ. Don’t be fooled or infatuated with pastors who are dynamic speakers or have a ministry larger than yours. You keep your heart right with God. That is what matters. Men do not have larger ministries because of godliness!

Godliness is based on your walk with God. Church growth is based on other factors. These do not have to be in conflict or opposition, but they are not the same. They simply need to be understood and identified. Remember, gain is not proof you are godly; but, godliness with contentment is great gain!
