A HOLY DISCONTEMENT

April 14, 2009 by Ken Blue

DISCONTENTMENT OF THE CHRISTIAN

discontentmentBy Ken Blue

  • “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.” Psalms 17:15.
  • “For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:” 2 Corinthians 5:2.
  • “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Romans 7:24.

I am fully aware of the Bible verses that teach the child of God to be content. If it were not for these, we would surely despair of life. However, God does expect His children to be discontent and He approves it in some situations.

[perfectpullquote align=”right” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]The world’s philosophy is our enemy[/perfectpullquote]

We wonder how anyone could read the book of Job and not identify with some of the discontentment experience in his life. David expressed a holy discontentment in the above text. Much of the time his physical life was in jeopardy. He knew the resurrection was the only sure path to complete contentment. Paul said the same thing when he confessed that we, along with all creation groan and travail in this body. We will never be completely satisfied until we awake in His likeness! That will happen at the rapture of the saints.

We are not expected to be content with the sins of this world. The world’s philosophy is our enemy, and it will destroy our joy and effectiveness for Christ if we become content with it. Then there is the incurable sin nature in every person. We find that each time we would do good, evil rears its ugly head. No child of God can be content with his own sinful nature. How often, like Paul, we have cried, “O wretched man that I am…” But, thanks be to God, even in our holy discontentment there is the assurance that we too will be in His likeness soon, and our holy discontentment will be a thing of the past, never to be remembered anymore!

A WAR WITHOUT DISCHARGE

A WAR WITHOUT DISCHARGE

Wheelchair By Ken Blue
“There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war…” Ecclesiastes 8:8.

This war for my life started about three years ago when I was diagnosed with the deadly neurological disease, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. I thank God for the hundreds of believers who have and are praying for me daily. However, the war goes on and each month I lose some ground. It has now reduced me to a walker, a wheelchair, and it seems it has begun its attack in my throat.

Each night is filled with interrupted sleep caused by back pain and lower body spasms. My own prayers and those of my friends do not appear to lessen the strength of my Enemy. I am not confused; there is no discharge from this war.

However, while there is no discharge, God does send in His comforters to support me. These consist of the excellent doctors and support staff that treats me. My wife assists me in every way she can by helping with my daily needs. Then, there is the knowledge that you are praying for me while I fight this battle. Although there is no discharge, these are God’s gifts of grace for this present war. Even today, I thanked God for the handicap bars in a public bathroom to assist those of us who need them.

If the Lord tarries, I will continue to lose in this battle, but I shall have been blessed because of you. This is not an attempt to seek sympathy, but rather to praise God for His comforters and a thank-you note for all who work to comfort me in this war, from which there is no discharge. Please continue to pray for Joyce, my dear wife and for me. Lord willing, I will keep you updated on this battle.

PREPARING FOR WINTER

March 30, 2009 by Ken Blue

Preparing for the winterPastors should be PREPARING FOR WINTER

By Ken Blue

“There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;” Proverbs 30:24-25.

Ants are considered wise because they plan during the summer months for the coming winter. Since ants cannot read, this passage must have been written for our sakes. The message is simple; wise men prepare for the winter.

Fortunate is the pastor who has leaders in his church that are farsighted and will implement some form of retirement for him. Neither the pastor’s health nor his ministry will endure forever. The time will come when you will be forced to retire. (That time has come for me.) You must ask yourself the question, “Will my wife and I be able to live on Social Security?” You probably cannot.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]The pastor’s health nor his ministry will endure forever.[/pullquote]

I suggest the pastor purchase his own home and have it put in his name. The church is also permitted to give him a housing allowance with which to make the payments. This allowance is also tax free. In addition, a retirement fund should be set up immediately. It may be a small amount at first, depending on the ability of the church. However, it can be increased as funds increase. I do believe Jesus is coming again, but that theology need not interfere with practical wisdom. It is not selfish to prepare for winter. According to Scripture, it is wise to do so. Besides, you should be as wise as an ant. If you are a church member, you should take the initiative to have some retirement plan established for your pastor.
