TWO TEST OF LEADERSHIP

Of all the management skills, leadership is the most difficult to define. What are the ingredients that make one a great leader? Many books are written on the subject, and we can memorize the steps, but many times something is lacking. We will let other wrestle for the answer.
This article is not a repeat of those oft published steps that one finds on the shelf. Rather, it is about two undeniable qualities, anyone can measure. They are simple, and to the point.

1. Leaders have followers. A large crowd does not mean great leadership. I have seen many leaders who were only “a flash in the pan,” or like “fourth of July fireworks.” In time their true character became evident, and the followers disappeared. So, a leader has followers.

2. The second test of leadership is how we respond in a crisis, or under pressure. Leaders do not blame others for their own lack of leadership. A crises brings out the best or the worst in us; Our true feelings, and character comes to the surface. Leaders are born, or hatched in the midst of a crises. The latent gift of leadership, may be dormant. If it is there, a crises, no doubt, will give it cause to emerge.

So, the two test of leadership, are, do you have a following, and how do you respond in a crises? These, you can see and judge; so can everyone else.

DON’T BELIEVE THE CAMEL STORY

September 6, 2012 by Ken Blue

Eliminating Camel Humps

By Ken Blue
Many pastors agonize over the summer and winter months when it comes to church  attendance and offerings. They have been programed to believe that these two seasons are predestined to lower church attendance. Dr. Elmer Towns compared it to a two humped camel. The gap between the camel humps is supposed to represent these two seasons. Growth could only be expected in the spring and the fall.

However, there are some who do not accept this view of defeat, and they work, pray, and expect to see God work in a great way. The following note from Pastor Murphy illustrates my point. He gave me permission to post it.

“Pastor Blue praise God for a great outreach at our annual Freedom Celebration (July 2012). We had over 800 in attendance with 300 + first time visitors and 14 people indicated they trusted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

That next week we had a great team of members and staff that visited over 130 homes with one profession of faith in those visits. Since this outreach we have had multiple families come back as they are looking for a church home.

What a blessing to see the church body come together to make this possible as we try to reach the community God has placed us in.

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily….. Acts 2:47”

Pastor, don’t be discouraged, and don’t quit. You can do better! I pray that some pastor, by the grace of God will accept the challenge.

LEADERS ARE DECISION MAKERS

Leaders of  great organizations were ask, “how did you become a great leader?’ They responded, “By making right decisions.” To which the novice responded, “How did you learn to make right decisions?” “By making wrong ones;” they all agreed.

Leadership is all about making decisions, and if you are to last in that position, you had better learn to make the right ones. People will not respect or follower a leader for long that cannot make right decisions.

Right decisions require, first of all, some skull work. You must think it through before you put your mouth in gear. A major problem of the amateur leader is that he speaks before he thinks. This character flaw must be corrected. You cannot make comments, and then tell people they did not understand you. You are blaming them for your double-mindedness. Think it through first.

One of the best examples of leadership is seen in the book of Nehemiah. He knew the problem, and the need. Necessity is the mother of invention. He prayed, and was ready if called upon. He surveyed the situation, but told no one what God had put in his heart until he had all the facts. Read his strategy, and learn from him.

Remember, you are not a leader because you make decision. You become a better leader because you make right decisions, and have followers. If you have the aptitude, you can learn to become a better leader. There’s many helps available; take advantage of them.

 By Ken Blue

When I received the note and picture from Pastor Murphy, I bowed my head and wept for joy. I hope you can rejoice with the great people at Open Door. Here is the message Pastor Murphy sent me.

Pastor Blue,

This is a picture from last Sunday night “special recognition service” We had 31 people join the church and 22 people baptized last Sunday night. We had a total of 68 go through the discipleship classes. (Sunday evening).

Praise the Lord for what he is doing at Open Door it truly is a miracle on 44th ave in Lynnwood Wa. Warren Wiersbe said, “If you can explain it, than God is not in it”. I am thankful that I cannot explain it. Thanks again for laying such a great foundation at Open Door; it truly has made my job much easier. Feel free to post this picture on your blog and write anything you want to go with it.

Thanks

Pastor Jason Murphy

Pastors, one of the purposes of my ministry is to encourage you, and get you to believe God wants your church to grow. Great sermons, Bible Conferences, A soul winning night, or the kind of music you may have will not do it. It takes more.  I believe God can do the same for you and your church. Contact Pastor Murphy, and discover what they are doing that God is blessing. You will be glad you did.

NOTHING HAPPENS WITHOUT LEADERSHIP

May 18, 2012 by Ken Blue

This sermon describes the importance of leadership in the church, and in the home. Leaders must have vision, goals, plans and a zeal to get the task done.
