Romans 8:2-3 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:”
We are dealing with the three laws found in this text. The law of sin and death, and the Law of Moses have been discussed in earlier articles. Here, we consider “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus…”
A law is a rule or a principle. We speak of the law of gravity, or the laws of nature. Just so, the law of death is associated with sin. The Law of Moses was a standard or a rule of perfection. However, the law of sin in our members cannot meet the demands of the Law of Moses. Therefore, we must have a greater law to set us free from the law of sin and death. This was accomplished in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The space shuttle is bound to this earth by the law of gravity, until the greater law comes into force as the fuel is ignited. That is the law of propulsion. Several thousand pounds of thrust overcomes the law of gravity, and the shuttle is lifted into space where if floats free of gravity. The law of gravity is still in force, but a greater law overcame it, and set the shuttle free.
We were held by the law of sin, and the condemned by the Law of Moses, but the law of the Spirit of life in Christ overcame all laws, and has set us free! The death brought about by sin, was conquered by His resurrection. The demands of the Law were met by one who was perfect.
Every believer is in our Lord’s death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. We are now in heavenly places where the law of gravity cannot reach us. Not only are we free from sin’s ownership, we are no longer its slave to obey it. Thank God for the Spirit of life that has set us free from the law of sin and death!
